Animals living in the Dry savanna habitat

Wide arrays of animals make the grasslands of dry savannas. Dry savannas are tropical areas with drought
resistant shrubbery, perennial grasses that grow up to six feet, such as red oats grass, lemon grass and Rhodes grass. Drought and fire resistant trees also add to the habitat. The dry savanna has three seasons: dry and cool, dry and hot, and wet and warm. The habitats of Africa, Venezuela, Colombia, Brazil and Honduras contain dry savannas.

Animals like elephants trampling seedlings that drop to the ground and knocking over trees can actually create dry savannas. Stripping trees by the bark eating animals also contributes to the formation of dry savannas, as well as fires.

What makes the dry savanna so unique is the many wildlife species that live there. Grazing animals like
giraffes, gazelles, elephants, zebras, antelopes, impalas, oryx, kudu, warthogs and buffaloes feed on the grass, bark of trees, leafy treetops and low growing shrubbery. All these grazing animals inhabit the same area, many in herds sharing the resources of the dry savanna. The large carnivore animals such as, lions, cheetahs and
leopards survive by preying on the grazing animals.

African birds, such as the Kori Bustards, Red Billed hornbill, Von der Decken's hornbill and the Southern Masked weaver also thrive in the dry savanna during the cooler seasons. The birds and some animals migrate to cooler areas during the hot, dry seasons of the dry savanna.
