Animals living in the Pastureland habitat

Pastures are peaceful places. Open space, green grasses of different types and nearby water make for an ideal environment for grazing animals. Domestic livestock thrive in pastures. Cattle, goats, domestic antelope and elk, and especially horses of all breeds grow and keep healthy in good pastures.

Good pastures have certain elements and qualities that make them critical for grazing animals' welfare. Good water supplies, clean and free of pollutants from any industrial site, grasses and vegetation free of noxious weeds, fences that keep the animals contained and safe from any nearby roads and traffic, limited rocks and stones and clean from any metallic refuse and trash. Barbed wire is no longer considered a serious option by ranchers or farmers because the veterinary problems exceed the cost of the wire.

Wild animals, mostly mammals, live in open pastures as well. These animals seek the vegetation and open space that provides an element of safety for the herd. Herd leaders, the "alpha", can see any predators long before they become an danger and escape is easier. Open, grassy spaces still exist in the Western States and you can still see grazing herds of antelopes and elk.
