Animals living in the Seasonal/Intermittent Saline, Brackish or Alkaline Lakes and Flats habitat

A lake is a body of water surrounded by land on all sides. Lakes can encompass many different types of water, and these differences in water conditions are what determine the animals capable of living in and around them. One of the most difficult habitats for aquatic life to thrive in is that of the seasonal/intermittent saline, brackish or alkaline lakes and flats.

By nature, any seasonal body of water is labeled as such because during part of the year, the land is dry, and during times of heavy rainfall, a lake forms. This inconsistency of environment is a challenge for sea-life as the dry seasons would cause the death of many of the previously thriving organisms. As a general rule, there are very limited species that can thrive in an alkaline lake environment These include but may not be limited to planktonic and benthic algae, brine shrimp, brine flies, bacteria and a variety of birds.

Brackish water is often considered an extreme condition within which very few life-forms can survive. In a seasonally saline lake or flat, each time the water evaporates, the salt deposits are left behind and continue to accumulate thus making the water even less friendly to animal life.
