Mirrorbelly

The 'mirrorbelly' or 'barreleye' is a barreleye of the genus Opisthoproctus, is found in most deep tropical and subtropical oceans and seas, from depths of 200 to 2,000 m.

The Mirrorbelly lives in the bathypelagic, marine, depth range 0 - 4750 m , usually 300 - 400 m environment.

The belly of the mirrorbelly spookfish is completely flat-like the base of a steam iron - and it glows. In the total darkness of two kilometres depth a school of mirrorbellies must be an eerie sight indeed. The luminescent organs of the spookfishes are odd. More
