The California moray lives in the demersal, marine, depth range 1 - 40 m environment.

The California moray is found in the eastern Pacific from Point Conception in California to southern Baja California in Mexico. I say it's almost a California endemic since sightings have also been documented as far south as the Galapagos Islands. More

The California Moray, Gymnothorax mordax, is a Moray eel of the family Muraenidae, found in the eastern Pacific at depths down to 40 m. Its length is up to 152 cm.They live up to 30 years old and have no pelvic, pectoral fins, or gill covers. More
