Facts about the subfamily Erinaceinae, the hedgehogs
The typical group, or Erinaceinae, is represented only by the hedgehogs, with the one genus Erinaceus, easily recognized by their spiny coats, and further characterized by the rudimentary fl~SJ~5 tail, the presence of vacuities in the palate, and the broad hogs.
The literary history of Erinaceinae is rich: In Shakespeare's _The Tempest_, Caliban complains of them "tumbling in my barefoot way, mounting their pricks at my footfall. (Full text)
(Incidentally, the toxin resistance of hedgehogs is truly prodigious and has been the subject of some research; they are one of the few animals that can safely eat giant toads (_Bufo marinus_), for instance.
