Pileated Parrot

Unlike all other species previously placed in the genus Pionopsitta, the Pileated Parrot does not have a contrasting brownish-olive chest, and recently it was established via mtDNA that it is indeed distinct enough for the others to be moved into a separate genus, Pyrilia, again making Pionopsitta monotypic. The plumage of the Pileated Parrot is overall green with bluish flight feathers, a faint brownish-maroon auricular patch and, in the male, a bright red forehead that extends down to just below the eyes.

The Pileated Parrot or Red-capped Parrot (Pionopsitta pileata) is endemic to north-eastern Argentina, South-eastern Brazil and Paraguay, where it can be found in subtropical or tropical moist lowland forests and subtropical or tropical moist montane forest areas. NOTE: The Australian Red-capped Parrot (Purpureicephalus spurius) is also called the Pileated Parakeet, which leads to an easy confusion with the South American Pionopsitta pileata featured on this page. For most Neotropical birders, the tick next to Pileated Parrot in their notebooks refers to a brief view of a noisy flock of short-tailed parrots flying high overhead in their characteristically erratic manner. Only with a large dose of luck will you see the birds perched - their all green plumage provides excellent camouflage and they remain silent when feeding so are easily overlooked.
