Crested Pigeon

The length of the Crested Pigeon varies from 30 to 34 centimetres . Colouration is grey with tinges of brown. It has a feathered but slender, black spike on top of head. They run with the crest erect. The periorbital skin is bright orange. Wings have black stripings and are bronzed, while the primary feathers have colourful areas of brown, purple, blue and green. Immature birds have duller colours with no bronzing on the wings.

The Crested Pigeon is classified as Least Concern. Does not qualify for a more at risk category. Widespread and abundant taxa are included in this category.

The beautiful Crested Pigeon is endemic to Australia and is common in lightly wooded grasslands, watercourses, pastoral areas, sports grounds/golf courses and parks in both rural and urban areas throughout most of the mainland. It is usually found in the vicinity of water, as it has to drink every day, and is absent from the denser forests. A slim, ‘long-looking’ pigeon with a conspicuous thin black crest most of the plumage is grey-brown, becoming more pink on the underparts. More

The Choiseul Crested Pigeon (Microgoura meeki) is a presumedly extinct pigeon which was only known on the Solomon island of Choiseul in the Pacific. This species was first described by Walter Rothschild in 1904 and named in honour of Albert Stewart Meek. The Choiseul islanders called that species kukuru-ni-lua which means ground pigeon. The crested pigeon is indeed a lovely bird with pretty and prominent details that are well seen. The crest is definitely swanky and a definite eye-catcher, the colourful markings in between the feathers lovely and the catch-light caught in the bird's eye worth an A+.
