Yellow Bittern

This is a small species at 38cm length, with a short neck and longish bill. The male is uniformly dull yellow above and buff below. The head and neck are chestnut, with a black crown.

The Yellow Bittern (Ixobrychus sinensis) is a small bittern. It is of Old World origins, breeding in tropical Asia from Pakistan, Republic of India and Sri Lanka east to Japan and Indonesia. It is mainly resident, but some northern birds migrate short distances. More

Habitat and Natural History: Yellow bittern live in a variety of habitats including savanna, forest, offshore islands, tangantangan, weedy tall grass and moved fields. They feed on snails, geckos, insects, and fish. They are not strong fliers. They lay three to four eggs which are tended by both parents. Yellow bittern are shy, and usually solitary, although flocks of up to thirty individuals have been observed. The Yellow Bittern is a small (36 cm) heron with a rufous brown neck and back, a black cap and heavy buff streaking against whitish underparts. The tail and flight feathers are black, the latter being very conspicuous on the flying bird. The bill is greenish-brown, sharp, and slightly longer than the head. The iris is yellow and the pupil round rather than bar-shaped as in the similar Cinnamon Bittern. The bare skin around the eye is greenish yellow, as are the legs. More

Yellow Bitterns prefer freshwater wetlands with thick vegetation to hide and nest in: marshes, grasslands, reedbeds, ponds, reservoirs, including man-made canals, dredge-mine lagoons.
