The Brown noddy is classified as Least Concern. Does not qualify for a more at risk category. Widespread and abundant taxa are included in this category.

The Brown Noddy Tern or Common Noddy Tern (Anous stolidus) is a tropical seabird from the tern family. The largest of the noddies, it can be distinguished from the closely related Black Noddy by its larger size and plumage, which is dark brown rather than black. Brown noddy terns have a greyish-white cap The Brown Noddy Tern is another interesting seabird which can be encountered in the Galápagos Islands of Fernandina, Baltra and Wolf. More

The Brown Noddy (Anous stolidus pileatus) or “Maaranga” is a seabird from the tern family. In the Maldives, the most special places for maaranga were located in central parts of the Maldives, where it was found abundantly than any other place. Adults have a shy-white forehead and crown sharply separated from black lores, merging evenly into gray nape. Long, narrow, wedged-shaped tail. Bill is black and stouter than the Black Noddy. Legs/feet dark brown. More

The Brown Noddy has a very large range, extending some 10,000,000 square kilometers globally. It is found in many regions of Asia, the Americas, Africa, Australia, and parts of Europe. It prefers marine habitats that are neritic, oceanic, and coastal or supratidal. The estimated global population of the bird is not known but is estimated to be quite large. The species is not believed to be experiencing population declines that would require addition to the IUCN Red List. More

The Brown Noddy is a medium-sized tern-like bird. They have a dark brown plumage overall with a darker tail and wingtips and an ashy-white forehead. Their crown is sharply demarcated from black lores and merges evenly into a gray nape. Their tail is long, narrow and wedge-shaped and they have a black bill and dark brown feet and legs. Plumage of both sexes is similar, but males are significantly larger than females. More

The Brown Noddy (also known as the Common Noddy) can be distinguished from the closely related Black Noddy mainly by its size. The Brown Noddy is much larger and its plumage is a dark brown color instead of black. Because these are a colonial type of bird, they typically nest on elevated areas like cliffs or short trees, but they sometimes nest on flat grounds, like the Brown Noddies that came to the Dry Tortugas. More

The Brown noddy is about 33-40cm long and has a wing length of 28cm. They have light, purplish-gray crowns, gray colored throats, the area from their forehead down to their frontal shields is off-white, and the rest of their plumage is brownish-black. Their primary feathers, tail feathers, beaks, and legs are all black. Behavior: Brown noddies feed primarily on fish and mollusks and prefer to live on coastlines, reef cliffs, and islands located in tropical and subtropical areas. More

Photos of the Brown Noddy (Anous stolidus) on the ground, on the tree and flying over the sea and Eastern island/Midway/Hawaii. Pictures of Brown Noddy chick can be seen. = Approximately 1,000 Brown Noddy pairs (Anous stolidus) nest on the Midway Islands/Hawaii. Mostly near vegetation, the female lays its egg directly on the ground or sometimes on naupaka or iron wood branches. The chick is most aggressively protected by the parents: inevitably, they attack everyone who is considered a threat. More

The Brown Noddy is colonial, usually nesting on the in elevated situations on cliffs or in short trees or shrubs. It only occasionally nests on the ground. A single egg is laid by the female of a pair each breeding season. Etymology: Anous is Greek for "unmindful" (Harrison, 1990; see also nous). stolidus means "impassive" in Latin (see also stolid). The birds are often unwary and find safety in enormous numbers. More

white underwing coverts and whitish vent, while Brown Noddy has dark underwing coverts and vent (Sibley 2000). Migration: Migrates between breeding colonies on oceanic islands and marine feeding areas where it spends the nonbreeding season. No published information about nonbreeding range of species, although sightings and recoveries of birds from areas far from land suggest that the species wanders widely (Chardine and Morris 1996). The Brown Noddy is a tropical seabird with a worldwide distribution, ranging from Hawaii to the Tuamotu Archipelago and Australia in the Pacific Ocean, from the Red Sea to the Seychelles and Australia in the Indian Ocean and in the Caribbean to Tristan da Cunha in the Atlantic Ocean. The Brown Noddy is colonial, usually nesting on the in elevated situations on cliffs or in short trees or shrubs. It only occasionally nests on the ground. More

Brown Noddy is not only quite obviously brown, it is also substantially larger and this can easily been seen in flight. Its wingbeats are powerful and deliberate, the wings are fairly broad, the tail is quite long and there is always a paler area visible on the mid-wing (see last picture). All in all, Brown Noddy is somewhat reminiscent of a dwarfed Brown Booby. More

Of the two noddy terns the Brown Noddy is larger (16-18 inches; 40-45 cm, total length) than the Black Noddy (14-15 inches; 35-39 cm total length). Both noddy terns have white caps. As it's name implies this species is brownish and less dark. It also has a larger broader bill. That said, these terns would be very difficult to identify in flight at sea or when both species are not available for direct comparison. More
