It is found in Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, French Guiana, Guyana, Paraguay, Peru, and Venezuela. Its natural habitats are subtropical or tropical moist lowland forests, rivers, and swamps.

Plain-tailed nighthawk - Its natural habitat is dry savanna. It is threatened by habitat loss.
