The Pycroft's Petrel is a species of seabird in the Procellariidae family. It is found in Japan, New Zealand, Norfolk Island, the United States, United States Minor Outlying Islands, and Wallis and Futuna Islands. It breeds only in New Zealand, nesting only on Stephenson, Poor Knights Islands, Hen and Chickens Islands, and Mercury Islands. Its natural habitats are temperate forests, temperate shrubland, and open seas.
The Pycroft's Petrel is classified as Vulnerable (VU), considered to be facing a high risk of extinction in the wild.
Pycroft's Petrel breeds from November to March on islands off New Zealand (Dunnet 1985), and until recently its nonbreeding distribution was unknown. It is now apparent that Pycroft's Petrel disperses into the tropical Pacific in waters of the Equatorial Countercurrent and South Equatorial Current between longitudes 99 29'W (July 1995; Howell) and 167 45'W at latitudes from 5 S to 18 N (Spear et al. 1992). flap? Pycroft's petrels were able to raise chicks with the burrow flap in place that was designed to protect Chatham petrels from interference from broad-billed prions. The adult birds probably took longer to enter burrows when they first encountered a burrow flap and some birds may have still taken longer than control birds to enter burrows six weeks after the flap was put in place.
