“The white-headed petrel was collected during Cook’s first voyage to the eastward of the Kermadecs and later in Bass Strait. The first published description of it, however, was that by Garnot in 1826, his specimen being obtained at Cape Horn”, Oliver records. “It was collected in New Zealand seas during the voyage of the Astrolabe and Zelee in 1839, and next appears to have been observed north of Great Barrier Island by Hutton in 1866. White-headed Petrel Pterodroma lessonii Range Circumpolar in the Southern Oceans. Breeds on Kerguelen and Crozet Islands, on the Auckland, Antipodes and Macquarie Islands off New Zealand and probably also on Marion, Prince Edward and Campbell Islands. Disperses to seas from the pack ice north to about 300S. Appears to be common in the Straits of Magellan but rare in the Atlantic and there are few records from South Africa although it may be more numerous than currently known. More

They breed in summer, laying a single egg in burrows they excavate in the soft peat of tussock grassland. Their diet includes crustaceans, squid, and lantern fish, caught by surface-seizing.
