It breeds solely in the Volcano Islands in the north-west Pacific Ocean, and winters in the Indian Ocean. Its status is insufficiently known.

Matsudaira's Storm Petrel eliminated again by the shallower forked tail and the lack of any obvious forewing patch on any of the birds seen. Pale shafts to the primaries do exist on Swinhoe's Storm Petrel but unless extremely close views were obtained it would be normal to expect these NOT to be visible.
