The little White-tufted Grebe is especially numerous in winter when large flocks gather on the saline lagoons of the Central Chaco. Almost entirely aquatic, he comes to land only to breed. Like other grebes he has lobed (not webbed) toes that are used to propel him when swimming under water. In winter the white crest that gives him his common name is much reduced.
