The Yellow-fronted Barbet is an endemic bird found in the well wooded area in the wet lowlands and mid hills of Sri Lanka. More info and images after the jump. This is the second largest Barbet found on the Island (the Brown-headed Barbet is the largest). It is unmistakeable with its yellow forehead and blue face. It frequents tall trees but descends to lower branches, especially when these are in fruit. More
Yellow-fronted Barbet feeds on numerous kinds of berries, wild figs, and cultivated fruits such as guavas and pawpaws-being rather a pest in orchards. It feeds its young mainly on fruit, but also on some animal food as W.W.A. Philips has published a photograph of one at its nest-hole with a gecko in its beak. The breeding season is from February to May, with a secondary season in August-September, but an occasional nest may be found at other times of the year. More

as the Yellow-fronted Barbet, Layard’s Parakeet and Ceylon Hanging-parrot will also join flocks, although they are not regular members who will traverse all day long with the flock. In temperate countries, mixed species feeding flocks are observed more during the winter when food is scarce. In the tropics they are observed all year long. Given the relative richness of tropical forests, the scarcity of food may not be the determining factor for flock formation. More

Our best views of Yellow-fronted Barbets was also at Hunas Falls where they shared the same fruiting tree as the Crimsons and were also boring nests in a tree in the middle of the golf course. More
