Like most small woodpeckers, Abyssinian Woodpecker is elusive. However, it is widely distributed and can be found in euphorbia, juniper or mature acacia forest. Good locations include the valley behind Adi Wagara Reservoir near Adi Keih, the vicinity of Milezanay village, near Tsazega or forest around Mai Aini.
