The Campo Flicker is classified as Least Concern. Does not qualify for a more at risk category. Widespread and abundant taxa are included in this category.
The Campo Flicker (Colaptes campestris) is a species of bird in the Picidae family. It is found in a wide range of open and semi-open in eastern Brazil, Bolivia, Paraguay, Uruguay and north-eastern Argentina, with isolated populations in Amapá and southern Suriname. It is generally common, and therefore considered to be of least concern by IUCN. The southern population has a white (not black) throat, and is sometimes considered a separate species, the Field Flicker (Colaptes campestroides). C. c. campestroides. More
The Campo Flicker is a colourful woodpecker from South America. This woodpecker may nest both in trees in wooded areas, and in mud banks and termites mounds in treeless regions. Adult male has blackish upperparts barred pale brown and whitish, with broader pale bars on scapulars and wing coverts. The dark brown flight feathers are finely barred buffy-white. The rump is white and may be variably spotted or barred dark, whereas the uppertail coverts are barred brown and white. More

Campo Flickers feed almost exclusively on the ground, walking or hopping along the ground in search of termites, ants and beetles. They sometimes forage in flocks. Campo Flickers have been known to hammer open the large mounds made by terrestrial termites to get at the insects within. * Identification Recommended Citation Dias, Raphael Igor, and Regina Helena Macedo 2010 .Campo Flicker (Colaptes campestris), Neotropical Birds Online (T. The Campo Flicker of southern South America is such a species and a very striking bird to boot. Yet even it has the stiffly pointed specialized tail feathers that held woodpeckers perch vertically on tree trunks. CAMPO FLICKER Colaptes campestris The last place most people would expect to see a woodpecker is in a grassland, but that is where the Campo Flicker makes his home ("Campo" is Spanish for "Field"). He is actually quite a terrestrial bird, hopping on the ground and probing for invertebrates. One of his favourite foods are termites, and the Paraguayan countryside is dotted with termite mounds each showing a woodpecker hole near the top, indicative of the Flicker More

The diet of the Campo Flicker is composed primarily of ants and termites (Sick 1997). However, the analysis of stomach content of eight specimens revealed the presence only of ants, including their eggs, larvae and pupae (Short 1972). On the other hand, observations made in the Brazilian savanna suggest that termites are the main food item of the Campo Flicker (RID unpubl. data). More
