Some recent authorities have suggested it should be split into two species: The widespread Mouse-colored Tyrannulet and the Tumbes Tyrannulet in western Ecuador and north-western Peru. The two are visually very similar, but vocally distinct.
The Mouse-coloured Tyrannulet is classified as Least Concern. Does not qualify for a more at risk category. Widespread and abundant taxa are included in this category.
