The Chestnut-winged Babbler (Stachyris erythroptera) is an uncommon resident of the forest. The bird is nationally vulnerable due to its small, localised population. aaa36.jpg KC Tsang reported seeing the male babbler in an unusual courtship ritual on 22nd April 2007. He observed that whenever the bird calls or sings, he displays “a white/bluish skin patch on both sides of the puffed up throat. More
Irfan Choo photographed three Chestnut-winged Babblers (Stachyris erythroptera) perching together at the Sandakan Rainforest Discovery Centry, Sabah, Malaysia during the last Christmas holidays. The three birds all show their iridescent blue throat patches. An earlier post by KC Tsang describes the male Chestnut-winged Babbler exposing his bluish patches on either side of his puffed up throat whenever he sings his courtship song. Dr Jonathan WK Cheah similarly describes a male exposing his patches while singing and bobbing his head. More
Chestnut-winged Babbler (CWB) at Sungai Sedim lowland forest. The voice of (call) CWB is really sweet and sounds like a melody song. It was an exciting moment to photo-taking this super active bird. It likes to perch behind dense forest vegetation, thus causing difficulty in focusing on the subject. Furthermore the dimmed sunlight under the forest shade prevented me to use a higher shutter speed, I ended up erasing many of the photos due to motion blur. More

A Chestnut-Winged Babbler (Stachyris erythroptera) local name : Rimba Merbah Sampah. They prefer the thick vegetation near the forest floor which made taking clear shots rather tricky. I’ve never tried using shutter speeds below 1/80s before but was pleasantly surprised by the outcome even though these were shot at 1/30s f6.3 ISO 800. A lifer _DSC0894 98. More
