It is found in Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, French Guiana, Guyana, Peru, Suriname; also extreme eastern Panama in Central America. Its natural habitats are subtropical or tropical moist lowland forests and heavily degraded former forest.

Yellow-backed Tanager - Hemithraupis flavicollis Yellow-backed Tanager Hemithraupis flavicollis insignis Guapi Assu Bird Lodge, Rio de Janeiro state, Brazil. Male. This is the only place I know where this tanager comes to feeders. It's a hard bird to photograph otherwise, since it sticks to the forest canopy. This species is found mainly in the Amazon, with isolated populations in the Atlantic Rainforest and in NW Colombia & adjacent Panama. A photo of the female is below. More
