Its natural habitats are subtropical or tropical moist lowland forests, subtropical or tropical swamps, and heavily degraded former forest.

Gray-headed Tanager (right) is in its own genus; it joins flocks of other species in the lowland undergrowth. Shrike-tanagers, genus Lanio, are placed here. So are the honeycreepers — represented here by Shining Honeycreeper (below left) — plus conebills (genus Conirostrum), Giant Conebill (Oreomanes), and Tit-like Dacnis (Xenodacnis). A juvenile Gray-headed Tanager would certainly explain the army ant swarm attendance. While only watching from the sidelines, my initial hunch was also Eucometis, but I could not readily explain the head color. Also Oilbird seemed rather down on that idea initially at least. Not a plumage I know since I see this species most often between November and April. More
