It is found on the island of Hispaniola where it is now restricted to central and southern parts of the Dominican Republic. It formerly also occurred on the Samaná Peninsula as well as on Gonâve Island in Haiti. In the south-west of Hispaniola it is replaced by the Western Chat-tanager which was formerly classified as a subspecies of the Eastern Chat-tanager.
The Eastern Chat-Tanager is classified as Vulnerable (VU), considered to be facing a high risk of extinction in the wild.
