White-throated Tapaculo - Scelorchilus albicollis White-throated Tapaculo Scelorchilus albicollis albicollis La Campana National Park, Region V, Chile. Another unique tapaculo endemic to Chile, found in dense vegetation on arid mountain slopes. I found this to be one of the hardest birds in Chile to get a decent view of, and was very lucky even to get a mediocre photo like this. More

where we have another chance at White-throated Tapaculo should we have missed it. Chilean Hawk is here too but rare. Later this morning we will drive southwards to Talca for an overnight stay. In the afternoon we will explore the extensive Nothofagus forest in the Andean foothills in the Alto Vilches national park. In particular we will be listening for the nasal scolding of Chile’s least known Tapaculo, the Chestnut-throated Huet-huet, perhaps the most missed Chilean endemic on most tours. More

White-throated Tapaculo and after a quick discussion with our guides and driver we were on our way to La Campana for a second crack at this species, but not until we had taken a short detour for some superb views of a pair of Mountain Caracaras. This time we entered La Campana from the Ocoa sector off Ruta 5, and after an ill-advised lunch stop right next to a wasps nest, we set off in search of our target. More

Moustached Turca, White-throated Tapaculo, Chilean Pigeon and Chilean Tinamou. Two hummingbirds we hope to see are the tiny Green-backed Firecrown and the huge Giant Hummingbird, the largest hummingbird in the world. We then head for the wetlands of Batuco north of Chile to search for wonderful birds like Yellow-winged Blackbird, Stripe-backed Bittern, South American Painted Snipe and a selection of waterbirds. White-throated Tapaculo (listen to the song of the tapaculo) just showed briefly to one of us, although checking another area of the park brought the reward we desired - a full on view of this striking endemic calling back to us from some low scrub. Ironically our first Chilean tapaculo of the tour, also was arguably the most shy of the bunch and so a good one to kick start us. More
