This passerine averages 8.3-8.7 in in length and between 2.8-3.5 oz . The bird is mostly black with large white spots, a brown flank, and a reddish head and throat. A call, apparently given by birds to announce their presence to conspecifics, is described as loud, emphatic WHEEUW! whistle which as it seems can be heard from a long distance .
The Ocellated Tapaculo is classified as Least Concern. Does not qualify for a more at risk category. Widespread and abundant taxa are included in this category.
Ocellated Tapaculo - Acropternis orthonyx Ocellated Tapaculo Acropternis orthonyx infuscatus Papallacta, Napo province, Ecuador. Now opinions can vary, but I think this is the most spectacular of all tapaculos, and even rates as one of the neatest birds in South America. It is generally uncommon and local in bamboo-laden temperate forest in the Andes from Venezuela to extreme northern Peru. More
the "tapaculo of tapaculos" must be the Ocellated Tapaculo (left) of montane bamboo patches in the high Andes. I never dreamed I'd actually photograph one - however marginally - but on a cool rainy day in April 1992 and with the help of the tape playback of Brian Finch and the spotting of Rita Carratello, well, here it is. We had run into Brian (whom I had known years before as the top birder in New Guinea) in Quito and he joined us at Pasachoa Park. More
The Ocellated Tapaculo (Acropternis orthonyx) is a large bird found in the northern Andes in South America. It is a highly distinctive tapaculo; traditionally united with these in the "Rhinocryptidae", this presumed family is paraphyletic and most of the tapaculos belong in the Formicariidae with the ground antbirds which they resemble. It may well be, but is not entirely clear, that the present species would also be belong in the Formicariidae. This passerine averages 8.3-8. More
