Another important species here is the margarethae race of Variable Dwarf Kingfisher, which is very distinct from those elsewhere including the closest populations on the Indonesian island of Halmahera. On the Philippines this species appears to be a specialist of small islands such as Camiguin and Tablas and in these areas is surprisingly common considering its absence from adjacent larger islands.
