Iago Sparrow

The Iago Sparrow , is a passerine bird of the sparrow family Passeridae. It is also known as the Cape Verde Sparrow and the Rufous-backed Sparrow. It is endemic to the Cape Verde Islands, in the eastern Atlantic Ocean. It was first collected by Charles Darwin, and was described for him by John Gould, as with the Darwin's finches. It is sometimes considered to be a subspecies of the Great Sparrow of mainland Africa, but it actually is more closely related to the House Sparrow and the Spanish Sparrow.

The Iago Sparrow is classified as Least Concern. Does not qualify for a more at risk category. Widespread and abundant taxa are included in this category.

A rather attractive small sparrow, the male Iago sparrow has a black or blackish-grey crown, forehead and eyestripe, a small patch of white on the lower forehead, and a small black ‘bib’ on the chin and throat. The sides of the head, above the eye, are a rich cinnamon-brown, and there is a cinnamon-brown patch and small white bar on the scapulars (‘shoulders’). The rest of the upperparts and wings are brownish, streaked with black and buff, and the tail is brown. More

The Iago Sparrow is a little over 5 inches long with a 6.75 to 7.75 inch wingspan. The male has a black crown, throat and eye stripe. The sides of the head are reddish-brown and the nape is gray. The cheeks and underparts are whitish while the upperparts are reddish-brown with black streaks. The female is gray-brown above with dark streaks and whitish below. It is very similar to the female House Sparrow but has a more obvious pale stripe over the eye. More

Bar-tailed Lark Ammomanes cinctura and Iago Sparrow Passer iagoensis have all been seen here. The saltpans of Santa Maria ("salinas de Santa Maria"), in the south of the island is another good site for waders, and the surrounding beach together with the saltpans is one of the best sites for breeding Kentish Plovers. Ospreys Pandion haliaetus have been found here and the local sand dunes and plains are the best place for Greater Hoopoe-Lark Alaemon alaudipes on this island. More
