The Dusky-brown Oriole on Halmahera is a close visual mimic of the Dusky Friarbird (Philemon fuscicapillus) and difficult to distinguish in the field, and on Seram the Grey-collared Oriole is virtually identical to the Seram Friarbird (Philemon subcorniculatus). The two subspecies of the Black-eared Oriole, one on Buru and the other in the Tanimbar Islands, are each closely similar visually to the respective island races of the Black-faced Friarbird (Philemon moluccensis) and are said also to be vocal mimics.
