This sunbird is common in gardens, fynbos, forests and coastal scrub. The Southern Double-collared Sunbird breeds from April to December, depending on region. The closed oval nest is constructed from grass, lichen and other plant material, bound together with spider webs. It has a side entrance which sometimes has a porch, and is lined with wool, plant down and feathers.

The Southern Double-collared Sunbird is 12 cm long. The adult male has a glossy, metallic green head, throat upper breast and back. It has a brilliant red band across the chest, separated from the green breast by a narrow metallic blue band. The rest of the underparts are whitish. When displaying, yellow feather tufts can be seen on the shoulders. As with other sunbirds the bill is long and decurved. The bill, legs and feet are black. The eye is dark brown. More

It is a stunning sunbird and looks much like the Greater Double-collared Sunbird which is slightly larger and has more red on its chest. Southern Double-collared Sunbird Cinnyris chalbeus (KwaZulu-Natal race subalaris with broad breast band) that also feeds on the flowers. Our Durban species has flowers that are produced on the upper side of each branch in the same spikes that are about the size of a human little finger. The red flowers pop out of the spike a little like a snapdragon flower. The primary pollinators of this plant are the forest sunbirds like the Grey, Olive and Collared sunbirds. More

I had been leopard-crawling all over the garden trying to capture it, and as I took the picture it was about to fly away. Not more than a day after I sent this picture into the African Birds and Birding, the sunbird flew into our house. More
