above (left) shows a Streaked Spiderhunter (Arachnothera magna) on an ornamental banana plant (Musa ornate). That on the right shows a Little Spiderhunter (A. longirostra) on a ginger plant. In both, the bill of the spiderhunter is covered with whitish pollen. As they visit one flower after another, they effect cross pollination. According to Gill (2007), a flap covers and protects the nostrils of some birds, especially diving and flower-feeding species. More

Note that the long bill, narrowing to a sharp point, fits perfectly into the slender banana flower, as the bird probes deeply for nectar (above). Once out of the flower, the bill is dusted with whitish pollen (above left). The spiderhunter’s tongue, projecting out from the bill, is long and slender (above right). Images by Roger Moo. More

This Streaked Spiderhunter has pierced the side of a closed hibiscus flower and is drinking the nectar without pollinating the flower - a tactic known as nectar-robbing. The spiderhunters are omnivorous. As their name suggests they will eat spiders, and are capable of extracting spiders from the centre of their webs, a tricky task. They also consume a wide range of other small arthropod prey including crickets, caterpillars, butterflies, ants and other insects. More

Saw two adult Streaked Spiderhunters, a pair, visit this bare tree and exhibit some unexplained behaviour. We were some distance away but it was clear that they were foraging, but we could not see what they were looking for. They both searched extensively; many branches were explored carefully. They even fluttered to try and get what they were after. This behaviour continued for many minutes. - Amar Taxonomic Notes : Subspecific identity of the taxon occurring in Peninsular Malaysia is not magna ... More
