The Black Shama or locally known as Siloy (Copsychus cebuensis) is a species of bird which can only be found in the Philippines. Endemic to the island of Cebu, it thrives in the forest and dense thickets of close to the ground. Its diet is believed to be composed of beetles, and it is doubtless that no migration patterns exist. I hope more people will be made aware that the Black Shama is only found in the island of Cebu, Philippines and is struggling to survive in the remaining forest habitat of the Tabunan Forest. The black shama is a medium-sized bird with entirely black plumage. The male has a dark bluish sheen to its plumage, whilst the female is a little more blackish grey, and smaller than the male. The tail is long and graduated, the bill is black and the eyes are dark brown. Juveniles are greyer with browner wings (2). Black Shama, is difficult to draw out into the open. The territorial bird is suspicious of human beings in its habitat. Bacolod demonstrated that part of his skill last July to a Cebu Daily News team which visited him in his hut in barangay Casili, where patches of tertiary growth forest are fast being squeezed out by subdivision development. One Siloy flew towards him but stayed at a distance, singing out in reply. More
