Rock Pipit

The Rock Pipit, Anthus petrosus, is a small passerine bird species which breeds on rocky coasts of western Europe northwards from Brittany. It is mainly resident in Ireland, Great Britain and France, in the west of its range, but the Scandinavian and Russian populations migrate south in winter; individuals sometimes stray into inland Europe. In Saxony it is a rarely-seen visitor for example; the Staatliches Museum für Tierkunde Dresden has but a single specimen , a male shot at Dresden as long ago as 8. Oktober 1894.

The Rock Pipit's subspecies littoralis in summer plumage is very close in outward appearance to the Water Pipit however. They can be told apart by their song, and occupy different habitat types even when they occur in the same general area. The Water Pipit is also much less approachable than the Rock Pipit, rising high and quickly leaving the vicinity when approached. Water and Buff-bellied Pipit do not co-occur except in a small area in Central Asia. This species is insectivorous. More

of just about half a dozen notes each (the Rock Pipit has fewer, but longer blocks); it ends either with no or with repeated trills. Formerly included in the Water Pipit were the subspecies now separated as Rock Pipit and Buff-bellied Pipit. The former is more closely related to the Water Pipit than the latter, as indicated by external and molecular characteristics. which Rock Pipit was previously considered conspecific (of, or belonging to, the same species) (Sangster et al., 2002); they are usually indistinguishable from petrosus in winter. Judging from external (Alström & Mild, 1987) and molecular (Voelker, 1999) characteristics, this species and the Water Pipit are very closely related. More

The Rock pipit is almost exclusively a coastal bird although birds from Scandinavia do migrate and may turn up elsewhere. They are larger than Meadow Pipits, almost as big as a Tawny Pipit, and they are strikingly dark, so much so that the black streaks on their underparts become almost lost in a dark grey-brown wash. They can be told from the similar Water pipit by their dull grey, not white, outer tail feathers and by their all dark head with no eye-stripe or wingbars. More

A Gallery of Scandinavian Rock Pipit in Christchurch Harbour For the last few years, it has been suspected that a percentage of the Rock Pipit that winter on Stanpit may be of the Scandinavian race littoralis. The first real claims were made in March 2005 and related to birds moulting into breeding plumage, click here for photos, The subsequent appearance of a particularly bright individual in February 2007 sparked renewed interest and many more photographs, a selection of which are posted below. The rock pipit is a large stocky pipit, larger than a meadow pipit and smaller than a starling. It is streaky olive-brown above and dirty white underneath with dark streaking. It breeds around the coast where there are rocky beaches, and most of the birds that breed in the UK are residents, with only the young birds dispersing once they become independent. Some birds arrive here from Norway to spend the winter. More
