including Rufous-collared Monarch (left, on a nest), now split from the Frilled Monarch Arses telescophthalmus of s. New Guinea and ne. Australia. It is one of the monarchs to show colorful bare wattles around the eye. Another species, Golden Monarch Monarcha chrysomela, evolved a pattern than resembles a miniature Golden Cuckoo-Shrike Campochaera sloetii. I don't know if that is coincidence or some sort of mimicry or convergent evolution. Exceptional photographs of many New Guinea species of monarchs are in Coates (1990). More

Rufous-collared monarch in New Guinea. Image copyright: Don Roberson. Is there a picture? Just the one that we can find. Click on the image to see it in its full glory. There are three other Arses which all have frilled necks, fleshy blue eye wattles and create delicate pendent nests. They forage by hopping up tree trunks in a spiral fashion. I tried that once, it wasn't easy. Check out some other weird species names here. More
