Are you interested in the BANQ 2009 Carpentarian Grasswren surveys in July and August? Last year we found five new sites for Carpentarian Grasswrens and 71 sites for Kalkadoon Grasswrens. This year has seen great breeding conditions, so there should be plenty of birds. Note that you will need to devote at least two weeks to the surveys, which involve walking across very rough country, and your hearing needs to be able to register high-pitched calls. More

Carpentarian Grasswrens have been recorded. The Buckley River runs through central parts of the IBA and has its source within the IBA and is a major tributary of the Georgina River system that forms part of the Lake Eyre Basin. About 95% of the IBA is leased from the State for grazing, and about 80% has mineral exploration leases, although the extent of exploration is highly variable over time. Further west they have also been seen along the Barkly Highway at the Burketown turnoff and again near the microwave tower just over 40 kms east of Camooweal. East of Mount Isa, the present known easterly limit appears to be a spot on the highway approx. 80 km north of Cloncurry. More

The Carpentarian grasswren (Amytornis dorotheae) was feared to have become extinct in the NT. THEY'RE alive! Territory Government scientists have sighted two of the Territory's rarest animals. The team from the Environment Department saw the Carpentarian rock rat and the Carpentarian grasswren on Wollogorang Station near the Queensland border.
