Welcome to the Blue Swallow Motel in Tucumcari, NM, on Route 66. The Blue Swallow Motel was built in 1939 by W. A. Huggins. It features a unique, personal shell design on the exterior stucco. Garages, a signature of motor courts of the era, are another unique characteristic of this motel. According to Huggins' son, Phares, it was sold at a loss because of economic conditions at the onset of WWII. With gas and tire rationing in effect, people weren't traveling as much. More
The Blue Swallow (Hirundo atrocaerulea) is a small passerine bird in the swallow family. Swallows are somewhat similar in habits and appearance to other aerial insectivores, such as the related martins and the unrelated swifts (order Apodiformes). The Blue Swallow breeds in southern Africa, wintering further north in Uganda and Kenya. This bird breeds in montane grassland, preferring high rainfall, undulating areas. In winter it prefers open grassland, with bushes and trees. More
Blue Swallow is a 2005 South Korean film based on the true story of Park Kyung-won, an early Korean female pilot. The film became controversial when Park's alleged pro-Japanese activities came to light. It was also found that she was not, as the filmmakers had thought, the first female pilot from Korea; this distinction in fact belonged to Kwon Ki-ok of the Republic of China Air Force. Some Koreans protested the movie and called for it not to be released. More
The Blue Swallow is an ambassador for a vital South African ecosystem namely grasslands. The South African grasslands form the major portion of our water catchment areas. More than 60% of the Grassland Biome has already been modified - forestry and agriculture playing largest roles. In South Africa only 2,23% of the Grassland Biome is formally conserved. The Grassland Biome is the least conserved, most transformed and therefore most highly threatened of South Africa's 7 biomes. More
species like the White-throated Blue Swallow nest in the dry season to avoid flooding in their riverbank nesting habitat. All swallows will defend their nests from egg predators, although solitary species are more aggressive towards predators than colonial species. Overall the contribution of male swallows towards parental care is the highest of any passerine bird. The eggs of swallows tend to be white, although those of some mud-nesters are speckled. More

It's called the Blue Swallow Motel, and it has a beautiful neon sign out front. Doggie (not Jerry!) in the window. Emily and I sat outside and looked at the sign for a long time while Ron checked us in. More

The historic Blue Swallow Motel on old Route 66 in Tucumcari, N.M., is reopening for business. Although it remains for sale, owners Dale and Hilda Bakke recently returned to their motel and will be running it indefinitely. They had announced the motel's closing in winter 2005 when a relative in Minnesota had become seriously ill. The motel's phone number remains unchanged at 505-461-9849. The motel, along with its Web site at www.blueswallowmotel.com, should be fully operational before the Labor Day weekend. More
The old Blue Swallow neon is one of the prettiest I have encountered on the Mother Road and it still lights up its welcome to the road weary traveler at night in Tucumcari. This pleasant stopping over place is perfectly preserved, a slice of what the old Mother Road must have been like once, right down to the vintage telephone on the nightstand by the bed. More
Staying at the Blue Swallow is like going back to the 50s when Route 66 ruled and there was no Interstate. Murals painted on the garage walls and side wall add to the ambiance. Rotary phones and old fixtures bring back the good old days, but wifi is free for the modern touch. I give programs on Route 66 and... More
Our family had the pleasure of staying at the Blue Swallow this Summer in route to Santa Fe. The hospitality was exceptional and the rooms, while modest in size and decor, are nice and clean. This motor-court style motel is straight out of the movie "Cars" and the town has a wonderful display of neon signs. If you are looking for a night or two of Rt. 66 nostalgia, this is your place. Blue Swallow had been recommended by another friend who had stayed at the motel. The owners, Bill and Teri, have poured themselves and their money into reviving this pre-WWII motel. Each room has a garage but today's cars (even Jane's VW) will fit, so each is now painted with a mural that represents movies whose actors, directors, etc. have stayed at the Blue Swallow: among others, Clark Gable, James Dean, the cast of "Easy Rider" . . . and last summer, Sir Paul McCartney. My husband & I stayed at the Blue Swallow while on our honeymoon down rt 66. We stopped for the night in Tucumcari with a booked room at the Blue Swallow. We arrived in the evening and were lucky to see the neon. We parked and headed inside. We had the room reserved on a credit card and since we didn't have cash on us, we just put the room on the card.
