The White-winged Cinclodes is found between roughly 2,500 and 5,000 metres on Puna grassland and rocky slopes almost always near clear, running water in small streams. It is easily confused with the sympatric race of Bar-winged Cinclodes which also has a whitish wing-stripe but White-winged Cinclodes is larger with a longer bill, more rufous upperparts and a greyer crown.
