Canyon Canastero habitat before entering the Chiguata basin. I saw the Canyon Canastero here 11.12.07. I have also seen it at higher altitude. some years ago. Canyon Canastero is in the brush. After a leisurely lunch we’ll head back to Arequipa for the night, stopping for any interesting birds along the way. Day 13 : To-day we'll visit the Scrub/Polylepis zone above Chiguata. Specialities here include : White-throated and Straight-billed Eartcreepers, Black-hooded Sierra-finch, Dark-winged Canastero (endemic), Canyon Canastero (endemic), Giant Conebill and the rare Tamarugo Conebill. Canyon Canastero (Asthenes pudibunda) - A few brief views on the Santa Eulalia road. Not terribly responsive. Cactus Canastero (Asthenes cactorum) - The very last bird of the tour, and we nearly had to give up or risk missing flights. In the end we climbed up a steep rocky slope and had a great view at Lachay. Streak-throated Canastero (Asthenes humilis) - Several good views at Marcapomacocha and Llanganuco.
