It is found in Burundi, The Democratic Republic of the Congo, Djibouti, Egypt, Eritrea, South Africa, Ethiopia, Kenya, Malawi, Rwanda, Somalia, Sudan, Tanzania & Uganda. The status of the species is evaluated as Least Concern.

Crimson-rumped Waxbill has a dark bill, red rump and some red on the wings and tail.
