Yellow-bellied Seedeater - Sporophila nigricollis Yellow-bellied Seedeater Sporophila nigricollis vivida Tandayapa Valley, Pichincha province, Ecuador. Female or juv. male. ID not 100% certain, as Black-and-white Seedeater (S. luctuosa) does occasionally turn up in the Tandayapa Valley, and females are essentially identical. It's a gruesome shot, but certainly demonstrates how ticks are a lot more than just a minor nuisance to a bird weighing only 10 g. More

as eye-catching as a canary, the yellow-bellied seedeater is nonetheless a handsome bird with a sweet song. Its pleasant trill helps the bird attract a mate, and after pairing it builds a cup-shaped nest in low-growing vegetation. Brooding usually coincides with the onset of the rainy season, for there must be a plentiful supply of grass seeds for both the adults and young. The female broods alone, but the attentive male frequently brings her food. More
