The Pine Bunting breeds across much of temperate Asia, migrating south to central Asia, north India and southern China in winter. It is common in all sorts of open land with some scrub or trees, including cultivation, but has a greater preference for open forest than the closely related Yellowhammer. It is a rare vagrant to western Europe, but often winters in NE Italy and Tuscany.
The Pine Bunting is classified as Least Concern. Does not qualify for a more at risk category. Widespread and abundant taxa are included in this category.

2nd Pine Bunting for Hungary Yesterday I got a phone call about a record of a male Pine Bunting in Zalaszentmihály. The bird was found in a larger Yellowhammer flock while feeding on a grassland. Since I could not go for it on Tuesday I decided to head to the village this morning. Two fellow birdwatchers escorted me to the site since my car was unreliable (that’s why I missed the Iceland Gull a few weeks back). More
The Pine Bunting is a robust 16-17.5-centimetre bird, with a thick seed-eater's bill. The male has a white crown and cheeks, and a chestnut forehead and throat, and a heavily streaked brown back. The female is much duller and is more streaked on its undersides. Non-breeding plumage is like that of a Yellowhammer, but with all the yellow replaced by white. Its song and calls are like those of the Yellowhammer. More

Eventually the male Pine Bunting is found in the flock. It's seen well enough. Everybody sees it. That's what matters I guess. After a while the whole flock of about 250 plus one takes off, flies around in circles, at times disappearing into the low-hanging mist. And we head for home, with our boots muddy. I even have my trousers muddy, with footprints of a wee dog on the right leg. It walked all over us, that wee dog. More
