Grassland Sparrow

The Grassland Sparrow is a species of bird in the Emberizidae family. It is found in Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, French Guiana, Guyana, Paraguay, Peru, Suriname, Uruguay, and Venezuela. Its natural habitats are dry savanna, subtropical or tropical seasonally wet or flooded lowland grassland, and pastureland.

Meyer de Schauensee (1970a) lists it as a species inhabiting grassland, Hayerschmidt (1968) records it from open sandy savanna with low grasses and scattered bushes in Surinam, and Snyder (1966) notes its habitat in Guyana as grassland and savanna. This elusive grassland sparrow breeds in tall prairies, wet fields, sedge meadows and open marshes in central and southern Canada and extreme north-central U.S., with greatest breeding densities in the western part of its range. This was our only Grassland Sparrow of the trip, and a nice 'Ammodramus' to add to the list. It was in habitat that a Grasshopper Sparrow would have found pretty appealing. We also had Yellow-browed Sparrow, another Ammodramus, on our Orinoco cruise. More
