The White-bellied Drongo (Dicrurus caerulescens) is a species of drongos found only in South Asia, mainly in India, Nepal, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. Like other members of the family Dicruridae they are insectivorous and is mainly black in colour but with a white belly and vent. Young birds are however all black and can be confused with the Black Drongo although smaller and more compact in appearance and the subspecies found in Sri Lanka has white restricted to the vent. May be related to D. leucophaeus. On mainland, nominate race exhibits decrease in size and reduction in extent of white on abdomen from N to S; overlap in individual measurements of wing and tail, however, is c. 50%, and more than that for bill, so that determination of geographical distinctions not possible. Sri Lanka races insularis and leucopygialis intergrade. Three subspecies recognized. More
The White-bellied Drongo is a resident breeder in India and Sri Lanka. Breeding / Nesting This species is usually found in open forest and well-wooded habitats. Two to four eggs are laid in a cup nest in a tree. These are aggressive and fearless birds, 24 cm in length, and will attack much larger species if their nest or young are threatened. More
