It mainly occurs at altitudes 3,250-4,250 m.a.s.l. in woodlands dominated by Polylepis and Gynoxys. It primarily feeds on mistletoe berries. Higher up is the Abra Portachuelo pass at 4700 m and on the far side there is even more polylepis forest and the White-cheeked Cotinga is seen more frequently here. We will continue over the 4900m pass to the Milloc bog for things like Puna Tinamou (rare), Giant Coot, Gray-breasted and Rufous-bellied Seed-snipes, Puna Snipe, Southern Pochard (twice) and of course all the targets Diademed Sandpiper-Plover, White-bellied Cinclodes, Olivaceous Thornbill, Black-breasted Hillstar, Dark-winged Miner, Junin Canastero, Ground-Tyrants and many more. White-cheeked Cotinga at Santa Eulalia Canyon = Alejandro went up Santa Eulalia valley today guiding for Kolibri Expeditions. There was no problem finding White-cheeked Cotinga at the Polylepis patch next to the road. Other birds during the day included Andean Condor, Olivaceous Thornbill and Diademed Sandpiper Plover and White-bellied Cinclodes. More
