Currently, it is monotypic within the genus Phibalura, but it has been suggested that the taxon boliviana should be considered a separate species, the Bolivian Swallow-tailed Cotinga . The nominate taxon is found in Atlantic forest in south-eastern Brazil, eastern Paraguay and Argentina . The taxon boliviana, which only was rediscovered in 2000 , is restriced to the vicinity of Apolo in Bolivia. Both populations are threatened by habitat loss.
The Swallow-tailed Cotinga is classified as Near Threatened (NT), is close to qualifying for or is likely to qualify for a threatened category in the near future.

The Swallow-tailed Cotinga (Phibalura flavirostris) is a species of passerine bird. As suggested by its common name, it has traditionally been considered a member of the cotinga family. Following the recent removal of several members from this family (now placed in Tityridae), the placement of this aberrant species is unclear. It is therefore considered incertae sedis by SACC. More
We saw many Swallow-tailed Cotingas on this tour, and we never tired of seeing them - absolutely stunning. However this wasn't the rarest Cotinga we saw on our travels - we also scored Grey-winged Cotinga at Pico de Caledonia! Unfortunately I never got a shot of it though, dispite it landing around ten meters from where Carrie and I were standing... More

Swallow-tailed Cotinga (©Nick Athanas)Next morning was absolutely fantastic - the birds seemed to be enjoying the warm, sunny day and everywhere we looked there was something to see. A roadside flock with confiding Serra and Black-capped Antwrens, Gray-eyed Greenlets, and others kept us busy for a while, but they kept coming fast once we got inside the forest with two more Large-tailed Antshrikes, a pair of Ochre-rumped Antbird, and a White-breasted Tapaculo that tried unsuccessfully to hide from us in a crack in a tree. restaurant, a Swallow-tailed Cotinga just perched in a tree opposite to me. The bird I had been looking for in the forest all morning was there just 3 m away from me! Of course I was too surprised to undertake any action (like starting video recording), so it flew off before I got to my senses again. Fortunately, I found out the next morning why the bird had come so close and why it dared to enter the HQ area of the State Park. More
