Dunn's Lark (Eremalauda dunni) is a small passerine bird of the lark family. It is a desert bird which is found across parts of the Sahara and Arabia. There are two subspecies: E. d. dunni in the Sahara and E. d. eremodites in Arabia. The species belongs to the genus Eremalauda; Stark's Lark of Southern Africa is sometimes placed in this genus as well but other authorities such as Handbook of the Birds of the World place it in Spizocorys. While watching the Dunn's Larks, we had two singing male Hoopoe Larks (though distant), and 5-6 Bar-tailed Larks singing too. At times the air was just full of quality lark song! This site, which holds the only known territories of Hoopoe Lark in Israel, is under great threat due to intensification of military activities there, so we will have to work hard to protect this beautiful site. Our primary target was Dunn's Lark, but very quickly I was distracted by a male Hoopoe Lark singing, displaying, chasing other birds away and justifying its reputation as the best desert bird in Israel. I was very happy to find this new pair that hasn't been seen previously. My heart was pounding fast, adrenalin was pumping thick in my veins, and of course I screwed the images up - wrong camera settings and shaky hands. But what a bird, so who cares about the images. discovering Dunn's Lark's became more and more realistic. This group were found in an unremarkable shallow sandy wadi, a place which I'd checked three times already this season and not seen a single bird of any kind! Dunn's Lark has a broad breeding range across Central Africa and the Southern Middle East, but is an uncommon nomadic visitor to Southern Israel. It is widely sought by local and foreign birders alike. More

Dunn's Lark at K76. Dunn's Lark is one of our rarest Larks, with single records every year and other years it is completely absent. The word was immediately spread out and many people were able to connect with this handsome Lark. The "knock-on" effect of many birders in the area searching for the lark also produced a nice Temminck's Horned Lark. (Unfortunately for some us the Dunn's Lark was not relocated the following day).
