The Red-gartered Coot (Fulica armillata) is a South American rail found in Argentina, southern Brazil, Chile, Paraguay and Uruguay. It is a vagrant to Bolivia and the Falkland Islands. In inhabits swamps, markes, freshwater lakes and ponds, where it mainly feeds on aquatic plants. Red-gartered Coots have also been observed feeding on smaller crabs (specifically the grapsid crab, Cyrtograpsus angulatus). This species is named after its red "garter," which is generally difficult to see. More

Red-gartered Coot 1 This photo shows a standard Red-gartered Coot. The shield is yellow and the bill is yellow, but they are divided by a series of blood red patches. There is one patch along the midline of the bill, the "saddle" and a patch along the base of the upper mandible. The two patches are divided by a yellow hair line. Also there is a small red patch at the base of the lower mandible, but not the extensive red of the Red-fronted Coot. More
