The Masked Finfoot is an underwater specialist, with a long neck, and a striking sharp beak and lobed feet which are green. The male and female both have a black mask and eyebrow that contrasts with a white eyering and lateral cervical stripe. The rest of the neck is grey, the breast is pale and the back, wings and tail are rich brown. The males have an all black chin while the females have a white chin.

The recent sighting of the Masked Finfoot (Heliopais personata) in Singapore has generated numerous of images, mostly portrait shots but there are behaviour shots as well. The Masked Finfoot is adapted for an aquatic habitat but this does not mean that it is clumsy on land. On land it can run fast and even clamber into trees, moving around the branches with agility. This is made possible by the feet that are not fully webbed. Like in coots and grebes, the feet are lobed. More

All three species exhibit some changes in appearance prior to breeding - Masked Finfoots develop a fleshy knob above the bill, and the plumage of the male African Finfoot and female Sungrebe also change. There is considerable variation within the finfoots on several aspects of breeding; in the Sungrebe the nest building and incubation duties are shared between the sexes, in the African Finfoot the female alone incubates. The masked finfoot has less stiffening and the sungrebe none. The legs and feet are brightly colored: orange in the African finfoot, pea green in the masked finfoot, and yellow with black stripes in the sungrebe. Bill colors are also bright. All species have predominantly brown upperparts (spotted white in the African finfoot), a patterned head and neck with a white stripe down the side of the neck, and white underparts (variably barred with brown in the African finfoot). sought after bird among bird watcher in Malaysia, Masked Finfoot is usually spotted in Taman Negara. We can consider that it was the most incredible bird watching period in 2005.
