There is some confusion in the naming of this species because the name of this bird in many languages translates literally into English as rock partridge. For instance, in Dutch the species is rotspatrij, in German - Felsenhenne, in French - poulette de roche - all literal translations of rock partridge. The bird known as Rock Partridge in English is actually a member of another genus, the Alectoris graeca. The confusion is further compounded as in some languages Alectoris species are known by names that literally translate as stone partridge. In Dutch, steenpatrij, in German Steinhuhn; Red-legged Partridge being rode steenpatrij in Dutch. Further complication arises as, particularly within the USA, the name rock partridge has been used for a variety of Alectoris species and hybrids. The international bird trade, for sport, aviaries and meat, has led to misapplication of various of these common and Latin names. Alectoris and Ptilopachus species are actually very different in size and habits, Ptilopachus

To my knowledge this was only the second time the Stone Partridge have been brought to the States, but we are trying to find anyone that may have had previous working knowledge of the birds (here in the States or elsewhere). Our goal is to find some breeders interested in helping to establish a captive bred population ensuring that future bird enthusiasts will be able to enjoy these partridge; and, we are discussing offering a very limited number of pairs for sale to these breeders. Keklik or Stone partridges can be found on stony and rocky slopes and in the forest area. They are smaller than meadow black-cocks and represent about 33 cm in length. Males and females are similar to each other; they have olive-brown backs, a white stain with a black edge on their bellies and smart sides with alternating black and 8-13 brown vertical stripes. The European stone partridge highly whistles while its Caucasian analogue ("keklik") clucks and cackles. More
