This species is endemic to the Indian Subcontinent. It is distributed patchily from Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh south into peninsular India and in Sri Lanka. The species interbreeds with the Black Francolin along its northern margin and appears similar to the female of that species but has no rufous hindcollar, instead having a bright rufous face and throat. The underside has white spots while the legs are orange-yellow to red.
The Painted Francolin is classified as Least Concern. Does not qualify for a more at risk category. Widespread and abundant taxa are included in this category.

Painted Francolin usually prefers drier and scrubbier habitat than Black Francolin but not such arid ones as Grey Francolin. It can be best distinguished by the pale chestnut sides of head without any dark throat edging (as is the case with Grey Francolin) Both sexes alike with minor differences and the hen has sometimes whitish throat while the hen has chestnut – both sexes without spurs. Call is like that of Black Francolin. Nearest place to Delhi is Kota where the bird can be seen. More
