Natal Francolin

The Natal Francolin is a species of bird in the Phasianidae family. It is found in Botswana, Mozambique, South Africa, Swaziland, Zambia, and Zimbabwe.

The Natal Francolin is classified as Least Concern. Does not qualify for a more at risk category. Widespread and abundant taxa are included in this category.

Both the Natal Francolin Francolinus natalensis and the male Coqui Francolin F. coqui were in Kruger Nat'l Park, South Africa, in July 1996. The Swainson's Francolin F. swainsonii was in Mahanga Game Reserve, Namibia, in July 2005. The Indian Peafowl Pavo cristatus was an introduced bird on Heron Island, Great Barrier Reef, Australia, in 1983. The non-native Chukar Alectoris chukar was in the Last Chance Mts. of Death Valley Nat'l Park, Inyo Co., California, in May 1986. More

The Natal Francolin is a common species of thicker woodland, riverine gullies, coastal bush and the edges of forests. It is usually seen in small parties foraging in the undergrowth, or close to cover. It may become tame at picnic spots and camping grounds. It roosts in large trees and is a very noisy bird. It eats seeds, fruit, bulbs and insects. More

The Natal Francolin is a medium sized bird, common from South Africa to Zambia. Likes rocky hillsides, water courses, and Acacia bushveld. Feeds on seeds, insects, fruit, molluscs and bulbs. When startled the Natal Francolin makes a strident long call of chattering notes. Nests on the ground in thorn thickets. The nest is a hollow scrape lined with grass. 4-8 creamy yellow eggs are laid, hatching in about 3 weeks. More
